Dynamics in adsorbed homopolymer layers: Understanding complexity from simple starting points
نویسنده
چکیده
Now more than ever, smart material interfaces in a variety of applications demand control over complex interfacial processes, often involving adsorbed polymers. To this end, this opinion article addresses the dynamic complexity in homopolymer layers adsorbed at liquid– solid interfaces, summarizing some of the simplest examples and examining the potential impact of specific complicating mechanisms: The distinction between diffusion limited (in free solution) and surface-controlled chain release is made, and then for the latter, several different cases of single-exponential desorption, self-exchange, and displacement are compared: Though the systems present great chemical variety, they have either a limited number of or a weak energy of segment–surface contacts. Increasing the strength and/or numbers of these contacts complicates dynamics, as does increasing molecular weight which can introduce chain pinning. D 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Influence of Charge Variation on the Adsorbed Configurationof a Model Cationic Oligomer onto Colloidal Silica
The adsorbed amounts and interfacial conformations of a low-molecular-weight oligomer of a weak cationic polyelectrolyte (15-unit chain of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, DMAEMA) on colloidal silica were examined, with the ultimate intent of providing perspective on the adsorption of high-molecular-weight weak polyelectrolytes. At all but the lowest ionic strengths or highest pHs, over the ful...
متن کاملEvolution of Layer Density and Thickness during Poly(ethylene oxide) Adsorption onto Silica
The conformation of polymer layers adsorbed on solid surfaces is an important concern for applications such as steric stabilization1 and controlled bridging flocculation of colloidal particles.2,3 Usually, the conformations of adsorbed homopolymer chains are described as trains, loops, and tails and can be characterized by different measurables: the bound (train) fraction of segments, the layer...
متن کاملThe Paradox of Intervening in Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
This commentary addresses two points raised by Kitson and colleagues’ article. First, increasing interest in applying the Complexity Theory lens in healthcare needs further systematic work to create some commonality between concepts used. Second, our need to adopt a better understanding of how these systems organise so we can change the systems overall behaviour, creates a paradox. We seek to m...
متن کاملInvestigation of isomorph-invariance in liquid methane by molecular dynamics simulation
In this paper, isomorph invariance of liquid methane is investigated by means of constant-NVT molecular dynamics simulations. According to the data extracted from simulations, equilibrium fluctuations show strong correlation between potential energy U and virial W. We also generated isomorph state points and investigated invariance of certain thermodynamic, structural, and dynamical properties....
متن کاملA New Approach to Detect Congestive Heart Failure Using Symbolic Dynamics Analysis of Electrocardiogram Signal
The aim of this study is to show that the measures derived from Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals many a time perform better than the same measures obtained from heart rate (HR) signals. A comparison was made to investigate how far the nonlinear symbolic dynamics approach helps to characterize the nonlinear properties of ECG signals and HR signals, and thereby discriminate between normal and cong...
